The story takes place in a small riverside town in the Three Gorges reservoir area. A new hydropower station downstream is about to begin impounding water , and the town will be permanently submerged. Most people have already moved away. There is no panic in the air , only a kind of tacitly accepted silence. On his last day before leaving , the teenage boy Xiaowu walks through all the places of his childhood: Uncle Jin at the photo studio refuses to leave , preferring to sink beneath the water along with the memories of his late wife. Xiaowu goes looking for his childhood friend Xixi , only to learn that her family has already taken the train north , while he will be taking a boat south. Two people who grew up together never even get to say a proper goodbye. The rooftop , the fireflies , and the dream: a promise that never came to pass , a night spent chasing alone , a dream in which the river and the people he lost overlap. Together they form the film's central motif of the "unfinished." ,
